PORTLAND, ME – August 9, 2023 – The Mariners announced the signing of rookie defenseman Alex Sheehy on Wednesday. Sheehy played his college hockey in Biddeford, Maine at the University of New England, where he was captain in 2022-23.
A 25-year-old defenseman from North Salem, NY, Sheehy played at UNE for the past four seasons, joining the program in 2019. As he rose to captain, he enjoyed his best season in his senior campaign of 2022-23, scoring three goals while adding 14 assists in 24 games. He was also named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference’s First All-Conference Team.
Sheehy represented the United States at the 2023 Winter World University Games, an international collegiate tournament held every two years – this past year in Lake Placid, NY. He posted the best plus/minus rating of any player in the tournament, with a +14, as Team USA claimed the silver medal.
Prior to his college career, Sheehy played prep hockey for the Millbrook School (Millbrook, NY) and spent time in the National Collegiate Development Conference (NCDC) with the Jersey Hitmen and Connecticut Jr. Rangers.
Sheehy is a former UNE teammate of Alden Weller, defenseman on last season’s Mariners team, and a Falmouth, ME native.
“I am really excited to be staying in Maine and to be playing for the Mariners next season,” said Sheehy. “Having played for UNE for four years, and being familiar with the area, will make my transition to pro hockey that much easier.”
Sheehy is the eighth player to be announced on the 2023-24 Mariners roster, which can be viewed here.
