PORTLAND, ME – January 4, 2025 – Thanks in large part to Nolan Maier's 37 saves, the Maine Mariners skated to a 3-0 victory over the Tahoe Knight Monsters on Saturday night at the Cross Insurance Arena. In front of a sellout crowd of 5,636, the Mariners sported "Throwback" specialty jerseys, honoring the original Mariners AHL franchise.
A pair of first period goals staked the Mariners to an early 2-0 lead. Just 2:40 into the game, Chase Zieky's long shot was tipped in front by Nick Jermain, redirecting it past Tahoe netminder Jesper Vikman. A power play goal doubled the lead at 10:41. Matthew Philip carried the puck into the zone and quickly got it to the point where Christian Berger fed Justin Bean for a wrister past Vikman's glove. Maine netminder Nolan Maier came up big in the opening period, stopping all 15 Tahoe shots.
The 2-0 score remained until 2:48 of the third when Maine defenseman Alex Sheehy tossed home his first professional goal on a shot from the right point that glanced off a Knight Monster defender on its way through. The 3-0 lead was more than enough for Maier, who refused to let a puck pass. His 37-save shutout was his second of the season, the fourth of his career, and the first that the Knight Monsters suffered in their history.
