ST. JOHN’S, NL – December 9, 2023 – Entering the third period down by one, the Maine Mariners rattled off four unanswered goals and picked up a 6-3 win over the Newfoundland Growlers on Saturday Night at Mary Brown’s Centre. The Mariners extended their point streak to six games (4-0-2) and pulled back to the .500 mark at 8-8-2-0 on the season.
The first period was riddled with penalty minutes, a combined 57 in total. On the ensuing shift, Tyler Drevitch buried a goal line feed from Owen Pederson to tie it up just 21 seconds after the Growlers goal. The Mariners penalty trouble continued as Nathan Noel took a double minor for high-sticking, following by Alex Sheehy’s slashing infraction. Newfoundland capitalized on the 5-on-3, as Isaac Johnson beat Arvanitis with a one-timer.
Into the second period, the Mariners began with a lengthy power play as a result of Josh Victor’s major penalty late in the first. At 2:25 of the middle frame, Jimmy Lambert sprung Alex Kile in on a breakaway, and his backhander beat Growler netminder Brian Wilson to tie the game 2-2. Kile’s goal was the 100th of his ECHL career as Lambert stretched his assist streak to seven games. Before the period ended, Growlers forward Ty Voit, who was just reassigned to the ECHL on Thursday broke the tie, getting loose in front, and finishing a feed from Johnson.
Kile struck for his second of the game at 2:54 of the third as Reid Stefanson came across the blue line and zipped a pass his way for a five-hole finish. Following a James Melindy hooking penalty, the Mariners grabbed their first lead when Jimmy Lambert wristed home a short-side wrister from the right circle. Empty net goals by Gabe Guertler and Chase Zieky iced the 6-3 final.
