PORTLAND, ME – December 28, 2022 – The ECHL revealed the rosters for the 2023 Warrior/ECHL All-Star Classic presented by Optima Health and Sentara Healthcare on Wednesday afternoon, including Mariners forward Mathew Santos on the Eastern Conference squad. The All-Star Classic will be held on Wednesday, January 16th at the Norfolk Scope in Norfolk, VA.
Santos, 27, is in his second season with the Mariners and has been the top scorer on the team for most of that span. He currently leads the team with 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) in 22 games. In 2021-22, his 59 points and 26 goals (both team highs) set single-season Mariners records in both categories. Santos was named Team MVP last season by the coaching staff.
A native of Etobicoke, ON, Santos had prior ECHL experience with the Toledo Walleye in the 2016-17 season, when he played 49 games. After sitting out a season, he played two seasons at Ryerson University, in Canada, and then missed another season due to the pandemic. Since joining the Mariners in 2021, he’s had two American Hockey League loans – one with the Springfield Thunderbirds and the other with the Laval Rocket. Santos played his junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League, mostly with the North Bay Batallion.
The Mariners host their final game of 2022 on Friday against the Trois-Rivieres Lions at 7:15 PM with a Concourse Carnival and a winter beanie giveaway to the first 1,000 fans presented by Martin’s Point Health Care. It’s also “Mainah’s Day.” After playing New Year’s Eve in Worcester, they’re back home on New Year’s Day to host the Railers at 3 PM.
