PORTLAND, ME – July 26, 2023 – The Mariners announced their latest player signing on Wednesday, as defenseman Gabriel Chicoine re-signed for the 2023-24 season. Chicoine was Maine’s top-scoring defenseman in 2022-23, his first full season as a professional.
Appearing in 63 games for the Mariners last season, Chicoine scored four goals and tacked on 30 assists to lead all Maine blue-liners in points. His numbers surged over the final two months of the season, with 14 points (1 goal, 13 assists) in March and April. He carried his hot streak into the playoffs, scoring a big goal in the Mariners Game 4 victory over Reading in the North Division Semifinals. He also added an assist in the series.
Chicoine originally joined the Mariners in the spring of 2022, after finishing his college career at Division I Bowling Green State University. Prior to Bowling Green, he played three seasons of Division III at Norwich University. He skated in 10 regular season games and two playoff contests for the Mariners at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.
The 26-year-old defenseman was born in St-Dominique, QC, and played in the Quebec Junior Hockey League for four seasons, primarily with the Granby Inouk.
“I’m extremely excited to be back in Maine,” said Chicoine. “The city and the fans are probably the best in the league. We’re going to have a great year again this year and I’m excited to get going.”
Chicoine joins returning defenseman Connor Doherty on the 2023-24 roster, along with forwards Cam Askew, Austin Albrecht, and newcomer Brooklyn Kalmikov.
