MIKAEL ROBIDOUX RETURNS

PORTLAND, ME – September 28, 2020 – The Maine Mariners announced the re-signing of rookie forward Mikael Robidoux on Monday. Robidoux appeared in just 11 games for the Mariners last season, but made a notable impact with his physical style of play.

“I’m super excited to be back in Portland for next season, said Robidoux. “I can’t wait to get things started. I learned a lot [last year] from the older guys about pro hockey as a 20 year old. They were all like big brothers to me.”

One of the youngest players in the ECHL, Robidoux joined the Mariners three months before his 21st birthday, and debuted on January 10th, 2020 against the Newfoundland Growlers. It was in his third game that he began earning a reputation when he was a major factor in a 3-2 Mariners home win over the Worcester Railers. Robidoux drew the Railers into several key penalties that allowed the Mariners to pull off a comeback win.

Robidoux quickly became known for his physical play, and racked up a total of 80 penalty minutes in his 11 games played. He engaged in three fights – one in each of his final three games against Newfoundland, Reading, and Norfolk, respectively. Robidoux is still seeking his first professional point.

“Robi brings something a lot of team don’t have in this new era of the game,” said Riley Armstrong, Mariners Head Coach and Assistant General Manager. “He finishes every check, works hard and gets under the other team’s skin. Robi needs to work on picking his spots better and controlling his energy and emotion. I would rather have Robi playing for us then against us.”

Prior to turning pro, Robidoux played five seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. For the first four, he was a member of the Quebec Remparts. In December of 2018, the La Prarie, Quebec native was traded to the Shawinigan Cataractes, where he finished 2018-19 and spent the first half of 2019-20, before joining the Mariners. In 203 career QMJHL games, Robidoux scored 27 goals, had 26 assists, and accumulated 316 penalty minutes.

Robidoux is the thirteenth announced Mariners player signing for 2020-21, and the tenth forward. Click here to view the current roster in full.

MARINERS VIRTUAL 5K TO RAISE MONEY FOR UNITED WAY

PORTLAND, ME – September 22, 2020 – The Mariners, in partnership with the United Way of Greater Portland, are hosting a virtual 5K event that will be known as the “Ners 5K.” The event will be open to Mariners fans worldwide, who will be able to register online and participate anywhere during the first week of November.

The term “Ners,” is short for “Mariners,” and is a self-proclaimed nickname from some of the Mariners players. Conveniently, it’s also found in the word “runners,” which is the operative term for 5K events. A 5K run encompasses 3.1 miles.

“The beginning of the fall season usually means two things; hockey is starting soon and it’s time to sign up for local road races,” said Adam Goldberg, Mariners V.P. of Business Operations. “Unfortunately, this year is different, but that doesn’t mean we need to abandon all things that bring the community together. Our virtual 5K gives everyone the chance to get some fresh air, exercise and an exclusive Mariners t-shirt. Not only will participants feel better after getting in a sweat, but they can also feel good knowing they are making a donation to the United Way as well.”

Registration cost is $25, with $3 of each registration benefitting the United Way of Greater Portland. Runners can register at the Mariners online team store, and must complete a separate item for each individual registering. Registration will run through October 31st, with the run itself taking place from November 1st through November 8th.

Registered runners will receive an exclusive event t-shirt and Mariners sticker and can participate in a number of social media competitions surrounding the run, including “biggest fan,” “best costume,” and “coach’s choice.” The Mariners are encouraging participants to post photos and updates on social media, using the hashtag #Ners5K. Only those who use the hashtag and post photos between November 1st and 8th will be eligible to win prizes.

“We appreciate the generosity of the Maine Mariners and their virtual 5k runners,” said Liz Cotter Schlax, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Portland. “Proceeds will support our early learning efforts that give kids in Greater Portland a strong start.”

For over 90 years, United Way of Greater Portland’s mission has been to improve people’s lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community.  Today, UWGP unites individuals and organizations around our community’s shared vision, Thrive2027, three 10-year goals to improve education, financial stability, and health for every person in Greater Portland. MARINERS REVEAL NEW THIRD JERSEY

PORTLAND, ME – September 21, 2020 – Today on News Center Maine’s “Morning Report,” the Mariners revealed a new third jersey that will debut during the 2020-21 season. While the blue and white jerseys will remain as the primary uniforms, these green jerseys will serve as an alternate look.

The new third jersey’s primary color is green, with the familiar navy blue and white color scheme scattered throughout. The shoulders are blue, while a blue and white stripe pattern appear on the arms and along the bottom of the torso. The logo on the center of the jersey is the shape of the state of Maine with the familiar “ship’s wheel” in the middle, a nod to the original AHL Mariners logo. The same patch appears on the left shoulder of each of the existing jerseys. The patch that appears on the right shoulder of the blue and white jerseys – a green replica of the original AHL Mariners logo (letter M with the ship’s wheel), will appear on both shoulders of the new third jersey. An additional unique aspect of the new third jerseys is a lace-up neck style.

“This new sweater is a great addition to our uniform rotation,” said Danny Briere, Mariners Vice President of Operations. “The green look is unique and eye-catching, and captures all the elements of our established color scheme as well as an ode to the original Mariners, which means so much to Maine’s hockey history.”

A video of second-year Mariners forward and Cumberland native, Ted Hart modeling the jersey can be seen here.

The Mariners plan on wearing the new uniforms during Sunday afternoon home games at the Cross Insurance Arena. A 2020-21 schedule has not yet been released, but the ECHL’s tentative start date for the season is December 4th.

Fans can purchase these jerseys immediately, on sale at the official online merchandise store. The jersey is available for purchase in authentic ($189) or replica ($109), plus tax.

MARINERS BRING IN ROOKIE DEFENSEMAN RYAN JACKSON

PORTLAND, ME – September 14, 2020 – The Mariners have added a defenseman to the 2020-21 roster, announcing the signing of rookie Ryan Jackson, out of Manhattanville College (Purchase, NY). Jackson served as captain for the Valiants in 2019-20 and also has a Maine connection, playing formerly for the Portland Jr. Pirates of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL).

Manhattanville is a Division III program, which competes primarily in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC). Jackson played for four years with the Valiants, wearing a letter in each of his seasons as an upperclassman, and sporting the “C” in 2019-20. A self-described “two-way defenseman,” Jackson had his moments of offensive production, putting up double figure point totals in his sophomore and senior seasons. He finished his collegiate career with 45 points (13 goals, 32 assists) in 104 games. Jackson was a two time UCHC All-Academic Team selection as a junior and a senior. He was also named Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2017-18.

“I’m always looking for DIII players that have developed over their college careers that might have been overlooked by DI teams,” said Riley Armstrong, Mariners Head Coach and Assistant General Manager. “I feel the way Ryan skates and how well he defends, he will be a good pro. Being a right shot defenseman also always helps the cause. I have met Ryan over the summer and I’m excited to see what he brings to the table once training camp starts.”

Jackson, a native of Montreal, QC, is already familiar with Portland, having played in the Jr. Pirates USPHL program during the 2014-15 season. He played 44 games for the Premier squad and two games at the Elite level.

“The coolest part about it was that our home arena was the Pirates practice facility,” said Jackson, referring to the former MHG Ice Center in Saco. “It was kind of cool to experience what the pro atmosphere was like so I got a taste of that at an early age but it will definitely be cool finally being able to play at the Cross Insurance Arena.”

Jackson went on to spend his final season of junior hockey in the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) with the Hawkesbury Hawks in 2015-16, before joining Manhattanville.

At the end of Manhattanville’s 2019-20 season, Jackson signed with the Fayetteville Marksmen of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), and appeared in five games. Ryan is the son of former longtime NHL referee Dave Jackson.

Ryan Jackson is the eleventh announced Mariners player signing for 2020-21, and the third defenseman. Click here to view the current roster in full.

MARINERS RE-SIGN MARC-OLIVIER CREVIER-MORIN

PORTLAND, ME – September 8, 2020 – The Maine Mariners announced the re-signing of defenseman Marc-Olivier Crevier-Morin on Tuesday. Crevier-Morin, a three-year pro, was an alternate captain during the 2019-20 season, his first as a Mariner.

“I’m really excited to be back in Maine for another season,” said Crevier-Morin. “I can’t wait to get the season started and play some hockey again.”

Crevier-Morin, 24 years old, appeared in 49 games for the Mariners last season, scoring four goals with nine assists. The four goals were a career high for the defensive minded blue-liner, who joined the Mariners as a free agent last summer. Crevier-Morin spent the first two seasons of his professional career with the Wichita Thunder. As a rookie, he appeared in 68 of the Thunder’s 72 games in 2017-18, plus six playoff contests. He played 56 games for Wichita in 2018-19, while under contract with their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.

Prior to turning pro, Crevier-Morin played just under 200 games over four seasons with the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL.

Crevier-Morin was named an alternate captain for the Mariners prior to the start of the 2019-20 season, joining Zach Tolkinen (C), Terrence Wallin (A), and Scott Savage (A), who were also captains in the franchise’s inaugural season of 2018-19.

“Crev was a great addition for us last season,” said Riley Armstrong, Mariners Head Coach and Assistant General Manager. “He surprised me last season with the skill set he has. This coming season I’m looking for him to get more comfortable and confident in his playmaking. Add on the fact that he is well liked in the locker room is huge for us in bringing him back.”
